What RingCentral AI Receptionist is
RingCentral AI Receptionist, usually shortened to AIR, is RingCentral's fully automated phone answering product. It picks up every inbound call, answers common questions from a knowledge base built from your website or uploaded documents, routes or transfers callers to the right person with a summary, books appointments into a connected calendar, sends follow-up texts and logs caller details to a CRM. It runs around the clock, including nights, weekends and holidays, and can handle several calls at the same time.
It is sold two ways. Existing RingEX customers add it to their phone system as a licence. Everyone else can buy it standalone and layer it on top of an existing phone system, cloud or on-premises, through call forwarding or a SIP integration. RingCentral says you can keep your current numbers either way.
Who it is for: small and mid-sized businesses that miss calls because nobody is free to answer, and in particular the three industries RingCentral markets it to: healthcare, legal and real estate, with patient intake, routing to the right attorney and scheduling showings as the vendor's own examples.
RingCentral AI Receptionist pricing explained
RingCentral publishes the pricing on its AI Receptionist pricing page, and it is simpler than most of the company's plans:
| Standalone | RingEX add-on |
|---|
| Starting price | $49 per month | $39 per month |
| Included minutes | 100 | 100 |
| After the allowance | $0.50 per minute pay-as-you-go, or buy a minute bundle | Same |
| Billing increment | Rounded up to the next 30 seconds | Same |
| Free trial | 14 days | 14 days |
A few things the page does not say. The minute bundles exist, but their sizes and prices are not listed, so treat $0.50 a minute as the published ceiling and ask sales for bundle pricing if you expect to pass 300 minutes regularly. The page does not say whether unused minutes roll over, and it does not name which RingEX tier (Core, Advanced or Ultra) the add-on attaches to. The add-on price also sits on top of your RingEX seats, which are a separate line on the bill.
Worked monthly cost at three volumes
The 30-second rounding matters more than it looks. A call that lasts 1 minute 10 seconds is billed as 1 minute 30 seconds, so the minutes you see on your phone bill understate what AIR will charge by a little. The table below ignores that rounding so the figures are a floor, not a ceiling.
In calls rather than minutes: at a typical three-minute answered call, 100 minutes is roughly 33 calls a month, 300 minutes is about 100 calls and 600 minutes is about 200 calls. If your business takes more than three or four calls a day, you will leave the included allowance in the first week of the month and the $0.50 rate becomes the real price.
That is the whole shape of AIR's pricing: very cheap to start, then linear. It is excellent for a dentist's office that wants after-hours coverage and a handful of calls, and expensive for a plumber taking 200 calls a month.
What RingCentral AIR does well
Setup without IT. You give it your website address and it drafts a configuration with your business details and FAQs. You then adjust greetings, routing rules and intake questions in a self-serve admin portal. The knowledge base is your website, your FAQs or PDFs you upload.
Routing with context. AIR routes by name, location, department or keyword, and when it hands a complex call to a human it passes a summary of the conversation.
Booking and texting in one product. It books, reschedules and confirms appointments through Google or Outlook calendars, including virtual appointments, and sends a confirmation text. It also answers inbound texts, books by text and sends follow-up texts with links or forms during or after a call.
CRM and lead capture. Customisable intake questions, with caller details logged to Salesforce, HubSpot or Zoho.
Languages. English, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Portuguese, with mid-call switching and a choice of voices.
Compliance posture. RingCentral says AIR is designed to support HIPAA compliance through encryption, access controls and audit logging, and that customer data is not used to train AI models. It does not claim certification for the product itself, which is the honest way to put it, and healthcare buyers should still ask for a BAA.
Reporting. Calls are recorded and transcribed, with analytics on call volume, resolution rates and transfers.
Limits and things to check before you buy
100 minutes is not much. The included allowance is the smallest among the mainstream AI receptionists we track. Rosie includes 250 minutes at $49 and Striveloom includes 300 at the same price. If you are comparing entry prices, compare included minutes in the same breath.
Overage is the price. $0.50 a minute, rounded up in 30-second steps, with no published monthly cap. The pricing page offers minute bundles, which presumably cost less per minute, but you have to ask for them. There is no spend cap setting mentioned anywhere on the product or pricing pages, so budget control is on you.
Inbound only. Neither the product page nor the pricing page mentions outbound calling. AIR answers; it does not call a web lead back thirty seconds after they submit a form. If speed-to-lead callbacks matter to you, that is a separate product or a different vendor.
No live human backup. When AIR cannot handle something, it transfers to your team with a summary. That is the right design for most small businesses, but it is not the Smith.ai model where a third-party receptionist picks up. If you want a person who is not you on the line, AIR is not that.
Regional availability. Standalone or add-on licences are available in the US and Canada. In the UK, Australia and the EU it is sold only as an add-on, so you need to be a RingCentral customer there.
Language coverage is European. Six languages, all Western European. A third-party review from CloudTalk, updated May 2026, points out the gap in Asian and Middle Eastern languages, which matches the published list.
Contract terms. RingCentral's negative reviews are mostly about customer service and annual commitments rather than the AI. Read the commitment period in the standalone AIR terms before the trial ends.
RingCentral AIR vs Smith.ai
These two sit at opposite ends of one trade-off: a cheap fully-automated agent billed by the minute against a more expensive hybrid billed by the call with live humans behind it.
At 100 calls a month of three minutes each, AIR costs about $149 standalone and Smith.ai Pro costs $150 plus 25 extra calls at $2.50, about $212.50. At 33 calls a month AIR is $49 and Smith.ai is within its free plan or the base of Pro. The crossover depends on call length: Smith.ai's per-call price does not care whether a call lasts one minute or twenty, so long intake calls favour Smith.ai and short enquiry calls favour AIR.
Pick Smith.ai when a human must be reachable on complex calls and you do not want to be that human. Pick AIR when you are happy to be the escalation point and your calls are short. The full comparison of per-call versus per-minute pricing is in the Smith.ai alternatives post.
RingCentral AIR vs Striveloom AI Phone Agent
Both are fully AI, both transfer to your own team, both book and capture leads. The differences are the included allowance, outbound calling and spend control.
Same three volumes as above, this time side by side:
At 100 minutes they are the same price. At 300 minutes AIR costs three times as much. At 600 minutes the Pro tier on Striveloom matches AIR's pay-as-you-go but includes more than three times the minutes, and Starter is cheaper if you sit near 500. The honest summary: AIR wins on native integration if you already run RingEX, and loses on included minutes from the second hundred onward.
The other practical difference is the cap. Striveloom lets you set a per-call and a monthly spend ceiling, so a month of spam calls cannot run up a surprise bill. AIR's public pages describe no equivalent.
Who should choose which
Choose RingCentral AIR if:
- You already pay for RingEX and want AI answering on the same bill, the same admin portal and the same numbers. The $39 add-on is the cheapest way to get a competent AI receptionist into a RingCentral stack.
- Your inbound volume is light, roughly under 100 minutes a month, or you are mainly covering after-hours.
- You need Spanish, French, Italian, German or Portuguese with mid-call switching.
- You are in healthcare and the HIPAA posture plus RingCentral's existing compliance paperwork simplifies procurement.
Choose Smith.ai if:
- Callers in your business sometimes need a human and you cannot be that human during the day.
- Your calls are long, so per-call pricing is in your favour.
Choose Striveloom AI Phone Agent if:
- You take more than three or four calls a day and want a flat price with a meaningful allowance.
- You want the agent to call new leads back, not only answer.
- You want a spend cap so the bill is never a surprise.
- You are comfortable being the transfer point, with the transcript and lead already on your phone before you pick up.
How to try RingCentral AIR
RingCentral offers a 14-day free trial on both the standalone and add-on versions. Here is how to make those two weeks count, and the same steps apply to any AI receptionist trial:
- Prepare your content first. Prices, hours, service area, the ten questions your front desk answers most. AIR drafts its knowledge base from your website, so fix the website FAQs before you start.
- Forward only part of your traffic. Send after-hours or overflow calls to the agent during the trial and keep your normal daytime handling.
- Call it yourself ten times. Ask for a booking, ask something not in the FAQs, ask for a person, speak a second language, interrupt it. The failure mode is what your customers will remember.
- Watch the minutes. Check usage after a few days and multiply out to a month. If you are heading past 300 minutes, ask RingCentral sales for bundle pricing before the trial ends.
- Check the transfer. Make sure the hand-off reaches the right phone with the summary attached, and decide what happens when nobody answers.
If the trial shows you are a 300-minute-plus business, run the same test with a flat-rate agent. The AI Phone Agent page has the live tiers and a 7-day trial, the AI receptionist cost guide has the cost model at more volumes, and the best AI receptionist software comparison keeps the full vendor table with sources.
